Rave Guardian FAQs

Who can use the app?

The app is available to anyone with the UA username.

How does the safety timer work?

The timer allows you to select people from your contact list to serve as your “guardian” to make sure you get to your destination safely.

For example, if you are studying late at the library and are walking back to your dorm, you could set a 15-minute timer and select your roommate as your guardian. Once you make it back to your dorm, you can deactivate your timer. If you don’t, it will send your roommate a prompt to check in with you. If they can’t reach you, they can contact safety officials to check on you. And because the app is on your cell phone, they will know right where to look.

Can university officials track my location when I’m not using the app?

No. You have full control over whether you share your location, or not, via the app. If you turn location services on, your friends, family members and public safety officials can only see your location if you contact them via the app or designate them as a guardian on your safety timer.

Will I still get text messages and calls if there is a real emergency on campus?

Yes. While emergency alerts do feet to the Rave Guardian app, it doesn’t replace the university’s emergency notification system. If there is a real emergency, you will receive safety information in a variety of ways, including via text message and voice call.

Am I required to use this app?

No. The app is a free service offered by the university to its employees and students, but it is not mandatory to use it.
